Ardlamont House is situated at the southern tip of the Ardlamont peninsula, from where the house gets its name. The south end of the Ardlamont peninsula is highly scenic with the mouth of Loch Fyne on its western side and the mouth of the famous Kyles of Bute to its eastern side. From the foreshore there are southerly and often dramatic aspects of the high tops of the neighbouring island of Arran and south down the Kilbrannan sound.

6 miles to the north of Ardlamont House is the picturesque and highly scenic coastal village of Tighnabruaich. The village is a well-known sheltered anchorage with moorings that are always lively with the comings and goings of boating and yachting craft. One of its highlights is the regular berthing of the famous Waverley, reputed to be the world’s last sea going paddle steamer. Always a sight to behold as she berths at Tighnabruaich pier with day trippers.

The village centre has a Doctor’s surgery and local amenities that cater for everyday needs. A bus service runs from Tighnabruaich to both Rothesay and Dunoon.

The city of Glasgow is 55 miles distant (via a pleasant boat crossing to Gourock) and has numerous retail districts and all the higher educational, cultural and leisure services normally associated with a major international centre.

Tighnabruaich has a reputable and award winning primary school and secondary is available at Dunoon Grammar.

The area is famous for its dramatic natural scenic beauty; yachtsmen and women the world over sail through the scenic Kyles from the Clyde marinas and on through the Crinan canal and out to the Hebridean islands. Sea, river and loch fishing are also available in the area, as are a number of commercially run shoots. Some of the local estates allow stalking by arrangement.

Tighnabruaich lies on “Argyll’s Secret Coast”, which stretches from Strachur at the top of Loch Fyne round the coast to Colintraive. It is an area of stunning natural beauty where there are countless opportunities to discover peaceful locations. Nearby activities include walks in forests or along the coast, fishing, kayaking or sailing and enjoying the wildlife.

Historical Note
Following the destruction of Toward Castle in the 17th Century, Ardlamont became the principal residence of the Lamonts of Lamont. In 1818 Major General John Lamont, who had fought in the Napoleonic wars, resolved to ‘build a house fit for my family on the most limited and frugal plan’. This plan seems to have involved the rebuilding of the main block of the existing house by Thomas Napier, a mason in Rothesay, and the retention of the early 18th Century 2 storey gabled wings.

The Watson family bought the estate as a summer retreat in 1894 when some alterations were made. Further significant alterations were made in 1972/3.

The result is a 5 bay piend roofed late Georgian house of 2 storeys with partly sunk basement. The present main entrance (previously the service door) is to the north and the house is entered via a pilastered portico built in 1972/3. Above the entrance is the round fan light window lighting the principal landing, reached by 2 flights of stairs. The timber balustrades and the plasterwork on the first floor date from the 1890s. On the principal ground floor is the dining room, with bolection
chimneypiece between two doors with reeded architraves (one altered to form a cupboard).

The hatch from the kitchen in the east wing and the door to the north were added in 1973. To the west is the drawing room, which has a timber chimney piece. Although the interior of the west wing has been much altered, traces of the earlier house remain; for example, a large segmental-arched kitchen fireplace was discovered in 1970 in the north gable wall and in the east jamb a salt-box. On the upper floor the original arrangement of two bedrooms with dressing room between along the south front remains, but a linking corridor to the west wing has been formed.

In the walled garden there is an early 18th Century sundial.

A cattle grid entrance leads to a gravel drive along the sheltered walled garden and with Victoriana lamp standards, opening to a gravel sweep and vehicle turning and hard standing apron with feature partaire roundel. The house is protected by tall mature trees and colourful rhododendrons, a track leads down to the beach with the boathouse where there are stunning views to Kintyre, Bute, Arran and south down the Kilbrannan sound. The formal gardens surrounding Ardlamont are laid mainly to lawn. At the front is a ha-ha separating the formal gardens from the adjacent fields. The gardens display a fine assortment of azaleas and rhododendrons and there is a feature garden pond at the bottom of the front gardens. The walled garden would at one time have been the source of main house kitchen produce; some of the ancient fruit bearing trees remain.

Ardlamont House is surrounded by a combination of semi ancient native woodland under planted with rhododendrons and small conifer plantation strips. The conifer plantations have recently been clear felled and have been replanted.

Burial Ground
Within the woodlands lying to the south of Ardlamont House is a small burial ground. The historic owners of Ardlamont were the Watson Family. Many of the Watson family ancestors have been laid to rest here. The family have retained ownership of the burial site and they retain access rights to the site.

From Glasgow city centre leave in a westerly direction on the M8 motorway. Continue for 21 miles to arrive at Port Glasgow. Follow signs Greenock and Gourock on the A770 for 8 miles to reach the Western Ferry terminal at McInroy’s Point. Take the ferry to Hunters Quay Dunoon. Leave the terminal and turn right on the A815 through Sandbank. After 3.5 miles turn left on to the B836. Travel for 11 miles before turning right on to the A886. Travel for 1.5 miles then turn left onto the A8003. Travel for 7 miles to reach Tighnabruaich. On arrival in the village turn right onto the B8000, continue along the coast through the next village of Kames, turning left at the post office and continuing on the eastern side of the peninsula coastal road for a further 5 miles to reach the Ardlamont Estate. Turn left at the main entrance, cross the cattle grid and proceed along the driveway to find Ardlamont House.

Alternatively from Glasgow proceed in a westerly direction on the M8 motorway for about 15 miles taking junction 30 onto the Erskine Bridge. Turn left off the bridge on the A82 and continue for about 25 miles to reach Tarbet. Continue to the left at Tarbet onto the A83 and proceed through Arrochar for a further 13 miles. Turn left onto the A815 and travel for 10 miles to Strachur. At Strachur turn right onto A886 and travel for 15 miles. Turn right on to the A8003. Travel for 7 miles to reach Tighnabruaich. On arrival in the Village, follow directions above.
